Membrillo is a ruby red, fragrant Argentinian quince preserve with a flavour reminiscent of rose water or pink turkish delight.
In Argentina Membrillo is eaten with with cheese as "Postre Vigilante" or in "Pastafrola" which is a delicious cross between a jam tart and a cake. Membrillo also pairs well with meat and game, adds depth to apple crumble or is great simply spread on toast.
Our membrillo is handmade in small batches here in Cambridgeshire to a traditional Argentine recipe using locally grown quinces. Making membrillo is a real labour of love; raw quince are rock hard and incredibly bitter but when boiled with sugar their yellow pulp eventually transforms into the most amazing preserve.
